PoE Adapter
Do you want to install an IP camera, video doorbell, or other network device without a separate power cable? Then a PoE adapter is a smart solution. With Power over Ethernet (PoE), you can transmit both data and power through a single network cable. This makes installations simpler, more organized, and often more reliable.
PoE is particularly common in security camera systems. You don’t need a power outlet near the camera because power is delivered through the network cable. This reduces the amount of cabling needed and makes for a much neater installation. Below, we explain exactly what a PoE adapter does, when to use it, and what to look out for.
What is a PoE adapter?
A PoE adapter (also called a PoE injector) is a device that supplies power to a network cable. This allows a network device to receive both internet data and power through that same cable.
Normally, a device requires two cables:
-
a network cable for data
-
a power adapter for power
With PoE, you combine these two functions into a single cable.
A PoE adapter is often used with devices such as:
-
IP cameras
-
video doorbells
-
access points
-
network equipment
The adapter is usually placed between your network device and the network cable. It then sends power through the cable to the connected device.
What is a PoE adapter used for?
PoE adapters are primarily used in installations where it is difficult to install a separate power source.
Examples include:
Security cameras
IP cameras are often mounted high on a wall or ceiling. With PoE, there’s no need for a power outlet there.
Video doorbells
A smart doorbell can receive both power and a network connection via a single network cable.
Access points
Wi-Fi access points in an office or industrial building can be easily powered via a network cable.
Network installations
Other network devices can also be connected using PoE.
Because fewer cables are needed, the installation is often neater and can be completed more quickly.
PoE injectors and PoE extenders
In addition to standard PoE adapters, there are also other PoE solutions.
PoE injector
A PoE injector adds power to an existing network cable. This is useful when your router or switch does not support PoE itself.
PoE extender
A PoE extender extends the range of a PoE signal. This allows you, for example, to connect multiple devices to a single cable or bridge longer distances.
This is often used in larger camera installations.
Does PoE require Wi-Fi?
No, PoE does not require Wi-Fi.
PoE operates entirely over a network cable (Ethernet). Both power and data are transmitted through this cable. This makes the connection more stable than a wireless connection.
Wi-Fi can be part of the network, but PoE itself always uses a wired connection.
Do all Ethernet cables support PoE?
In principle, most Ethernet cables can support PoE, but there are a few conditions.
Important factors include:
-
the quality of the cable
-
the type of cable (e.g., CAT5e, CAT6, or higher)
-
the length of the cable
CAT5e or CAT6 network cable is typically used for security cameras. These cables support PoE well and provide sufficient speed for video footage.
For longer distances or devices with higher power consumption, a higher cable category or special PoE equipment may be required.
Which PoE adapter do I need?
The right PoE adapter depends on the device you want to connect.
Important factors to consider are:
Power (Watts)
Some devices require more power than others. Standard PoE typically delivers about 15 watts, while PoE+ or Hi-PoE can provide more power.
Compatibility
Many devices operate according to the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at PoE standard. It’s important that the adapter supports this standard.
Application
For a standard IP camera, a basic PoE adapter is often sufficient. For more power-hungry equipment, such as PTZ cameras, a more powerful PoE injector may be required.
